Polonnaruwa is the main town of the Polonnaruwa District in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka and is the second most ancient of Sri Lanka’s kingdoms. It has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

Polonnaruwa was first established by the Chola dynasty in the 10th century after they successfully invaded the then capital of Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura

Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa is a testimony to the architectural brilliance of the Kingdom’s first rulers and the city remains one of the best planned archaeological relic cities in the country. The city has been used as the backdrop in the Duran Duran music video, Save a Prayer in 1982.

Adjacent to the ancient city is a small town consisting of several hotels and shops to help the tourists with their day to day needs. Polonnaruwa is the second-largest city in the North Central Province and one of the cleanest and more beautiful cities in the country. A huge lake built-in 1200 known as ‘Parakrama Samudra’; fabulous tourist hotels; and the population of toque macaques are the highlights of the city. The unmatched hospitality of the local people is always admired by tourists.
