Kandy served as the hill capital from 1514 to 1815 AD. Originally known as Senkadagala, the city later came to be known as Kandy. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. The style and character of Sri Lankan civilization during that era are beautifully reflected in the heart of the city, with its lake, temples—including the Temple of the Tooth Relic—and the well-preserved ruins of the royal palaces.

In the late afternoon, visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses a sacred relic of the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The relic was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD and has since symbolized sovereignty, always enshrined in great splendor.

During the dry season, from June to September, hundreds of elephants gather around the Minneriya Tank in search of water. Such a large concentration of elephants is rarely seen anywhere else in the world. Depending on migration patterns, the safari may take place in Minneriya, Kaudulla, or Eco Park.

Thereafter, join a cooking demonstration at Sigiriya Jungles Hotel, where you will prepare a selection of spicy Sri Lankan dishes. Enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry lunch.

In the afternoon, proceed to Polonnaruwa and embark on a sightseeing tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site by bicycle—the medieval capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th to the 13th century. During this period, ethnic harmony prevailed between the Sinhalese and Tamils, as reflected by the presence of Buddhist and Hindu temples within the same complex.
