The Dutch Galle Fort is a beautiful monument on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. It was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. It is a historical, archaeological, and architectural heritage monument, and has been inscribed as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Throughout the years the fort has seen many conquests and has been an important location for trade and defense. Now, in times of peace and independence, the Galle Fort is one of Sri Lanka’s best tourism destinations and boasts some of the world’s best colonial architectures. The nearby attractions at Galle Fort are Dutch Reformed Church, All Saints’ Church, Old Colonial Houses (within the Fort), Old Dutch Hospital, 17th Century Boutique Hotel, and Museums of Galle.
